STEF05 and STEF12 e-fuses for 5V / 12V supply lines

The STEF05 and STEF12 are integrated electronic fuses optimized for monitoring the output current and the input voltage. Connected in series to the 5V-12Vs power rails, they are able to protect the electronic circuitry on their output from over current and over voltage, improving the reliability of the protected device.

Unlike the standard mechanical fuses, that must be physically replaced after a single event, the E-fuses are easily resettable and do not degrade their performances after short circuit/thermal protection interventions. They include:

  • an overvoltage clamp circuit that limits the output voltage during transients to a safe voltage, without shutting the unit down.
  • an overcurrent block that limits the maximum current at the output. This function is accomplished by utilizing a sense FET topology. The magnitude of the current limit is controlled by an external resistor from the I-Limit pin to the Source pin.
  • a temperature sensing circuit that senses the temperature on the die of the power FET. If the temperature reaches around 175°C, the device will shutdown, and power removed from the load.
